Big Desert: The 3.0L Turbo-Diesel Story

A new engine for the TANK 500 and Cannon Alpha, developed on Australian roads.

Why Another Diesel

Australia asks more of a diesel than most markets do. Long distances at highway speed, heat that does not let up, a van or a boat on the back for half the year, and roads that turn to corrugation the moment the bitumen runs out. Building an engine that handles all of that is a different job to building one that reads well on a spec sheet.

So the brief for the new 3.0L Turbo-Diesel was written around the way this country actually drives. More capacity. More torque. And a development program long enough to find the weak points before an owner ever could.

The Dyno Comes First

Before it ever touched a road, the 3.0L Turbo-Diesel spent its early life in the dyno cells. Sustained high-load towing simulations, heat-soak cycles run back to back, and endurance runs built to break things on purpose, in a room, where breaking things is cheap.

Every failure fed the next revision. Tolerances tightened, calibration changed, then straight back on the dyno to do it again, until it held.

Then Out Where It Counts

Dyno numbers only mean something once the real world signs off on them. The development fleet went looking for trouble: outback corrugations, steep climbs under full load, towing at Gross Combination Mass, and long highway stints in the kind of heat that finds problems fast.

Every stage fed back into the engineering. Recalibrate, retest, refine, until the engine matched the vehicle it was built for.

Big Desert Had the Last Word

Which brings us here. Soft sand is an honest test of a diesel, because it punishes any engine that needs revs before it makes torque. Deep, loose tracks, dune climbs that have to be walked before they are driven, and a Border Track that changes its mind every visit.

The TANK 300 Hi4-T came through the Big Desert earlier this year. This time the 3.0L Turbo-Diesel took its turn, in the TANK 500 and the Cannon Alpha, on the same sand.

Two Vehicles, One Engine

The same 3.0L Turbo-Diesel now sits under the bonnet of the TANK 500 and the Cannon Alpha: 170kW, class-leading 620Nm of torque, 3,500kg of braked towing and segment-best fuel efficiency. More power, more capability, and thousands less than the competition. Not showroom numbers. Numbers that hold up out where they get used.
